
Addis Ababa — On the occasion of the International Day of Democracy, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, Chairperson of the African Union Commission, has reaffirmed the critical importance of democracy, the rule of law, and good governance as foundational elements for achieving peace, stability, and sustainable development across the African continent.
In his communiqué, the Chairperson highlighted the significance of the African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance, which serves as a guiding framework for Member States in their pursuit of strengthening democratic institutions and enhancing citizen participation. This charter remains a vital reference point for promoting democratic values and practices throughout Africa.
A Call to Action for Member States
On this symbolic day, Chairperson Youssouf urged Member States to intensify their efforts in advancing democracy, transparency, and good governance. He emphasized that these principles are essential for fostering peace, inclusive development, and prosperity, as well as for facilitating Africa’s integration into the global community.
The Chairperson reiterated the African Union’s steadfast commitment to supporting its Member States and the people of Africa in their quest for democratic governance.
